TEN MINUTES LATER, Scott stood in front of Roc’s, surveying the extensive building across the street. It looked quiet. People walked in and out of the building and up and down the street as if everything was normal. Scott crossed the street, pulled the wide glass door open, and stepped into a long, spacious lobby. Many individuals sat on the sofas and chairs placed throughout the space, while others walked about, conversing and laughing in person or on their phones. At the center of the lobby sat a security station, and at the far end were the elevators.

As Scott walked toward the elevators, he noticed that the security guard, sitting at the station, eyed him. He glanced at the guard and continued to the elevator where he found a directory of the businesses in the building. Aames Ventures was on the sixteenth floor. On the seventeenth floor was another real estate company, but the fifteenth floor didn’t have a name next to it. Before entering the elevator, Scott took another look at the guard and saw him talking on the phone. Once inside, he pressed the button for the sixteenth floor, and then the fifteenth floor. The elevator hummed to the fifteenth floor without stopping, and when the elevator doors thumped open, Scott entered an empty, dimly lit, stale-scented office space. He located the exit for the stairwell and zipped through the cubicle farm toward it. Before entering the stairwell, Scott heard the elevator doors slide closed and then the car bump into motion. He took the stairs up, and when he arrived at the door for the sixteenth floor, he opened it a slit and peeked through.

In the long narrow hall, Derrick and Keith stood in front of the elevator with baseball bats in their hands. When the elevator dinged and the doors scraped open, the two men rushed inside the car. Scott slipped inside the hall and raced toward the elevator.

“Where’s he at?” Keith said from within the elevator car.

“I don’t know. He’s probably still on his way up,” Derrick said.

As the two men stepped out of the elevator car, Scott kicked Keith in the face and sent him stumbling back inside.

Derrick dodged around his fumbling partner and swung his bat at Scott’s head.

Scott knelt and dodged the bat while jabbing Derrick in the gut before following up with a hook to his ribs and finishing the combination with an uppercut to the tall guy’s chin.

Derrick dropped the bat, wobbled backward, and grabbed the elevator’s door jambs to stop from falling.

Scott planted his heel in the tall man’s solar plexus, sending him crashing into the elevator’s back wall, where he smacked his head and fell to the floor, unconscious.

Keith jumped over Derrick’s sprawled body and shoved his own bat toward Scott’s head.

Scott slapped the bat off trajectory before thrusting the palm of his free hand into Keith’s nose.

The short guy dropped his bat and reached for his nose, but before he could touch his nose, Scott clenched his arm and put him in a shoulder lock.
